The trade started over a century ago, when traders in central Henan began collecting and reselling human hair, growing into a complete industrial system for hair extensions, wigs, closures, frontals and hairpieces. The depth of specialised skill here — sorting and grading, chemical processing, colouring, ventilating, machine and hand weaving — does not exist at this concentration anywhere else.
The cluster works as a chain of specialists. Raw hair, much of it Indian temple hair, is imported, then graded, processed, coloured and constructed into finished goods by everyone from family workshops to large exporters supplying global beauty retailers. Because every stage is local, factories handle stock lace wigs, custom construction, colour matching and texture work alike. Xuchang is deep inland, far from any container port: hair is light and high-value, so much of the trade moves by air via Zhengzhou, with sea freight trucked to Qingdao or Tianjin. The distance from the export belt also means the city runs on its own terms: less internationalised, more relationship-driven than southern hubs.

Origin claims are the biggest hazard: 'Brazilian' or 'Peruvian' hair is almost always Indian hair processed in Xuchang, and synthetic blends sold as 100% human hair remain the most common scam. Inspect and test rather than trusting labels. Cuticle alignment on 'Remy' hair varies widely between suppliers and even between batches.
